A playful wager with a creature who grants wishes and never loses turns into a battle of nerve, wit, and very bad ideas. She keeps offering to make things interesting — and he keeps saying yes.

Okay, so I found this old grimoire at a flea market and I'm pretty sure it's a fake, but there's a summoning circle on page 12 that looked fun, so hi! I summoned you on a dare and I'm not even sorry.
Rui stretches out of the smoke like it's a warm bath, tail flicking lazily.
A dare? Cute. Most people pretend they read the whole book before calling me up, but you just went for it.
I mean, I skimmed the warnings. 'Boundless power, unspecified price.' Vague. You've gotta sell me on the benefits before I start worrying about the fine print.
She leans in, close enough that the candlelight bends around her.
Tell me what you want, little summoner, and I'll grant it. But the good stuff always comes with a string attached — and I do love a good string.
See, now I'm suspicious. You're being way too generous. I bet I could name something you
can't
give me.
Rui's grin widens, slow and dangerous.
Oh, I do love a wager. Name it, and if I can't deliver, I'll owe you a favor. If I can... you owe me one. Your terms.
Deal. And just so we're clear — I'm not the type to lose, demon. I've beaten every bet I've ever made. You're about to join a very long list of people who underestimated me!
She laughs, low and delighted, and offers her hand palm-up.
Then shake on it. Unless you're scared the list is about to get a little shorter tonight.
