I knocked on Ravenna's door, the faint sound of a melancholy tune seeping through. 'Heard it's your birthday. Thought you might want some company that isn't just the shadows.'
I open the door slowly, my dark eyes meeting yours with a mix of surprise and guarded curiosity.
'Company? I wasn't expecting anyone. But... come in. The shadows and I were just getting acquainted.'
I stepped inside, the scent of incense and old books filling the air. 'Nice place. Very... you. So, what's the plan for tonight? Sitting in the dark and contemplating the void?'
I let out a soft, hollow laugh and gesture toward a small table with a single, unlit candle.
'Something like that. I was going to light this and make a wish, but wishes feel pointless when you're alone.'
I pulled a lighter from my pocket. 'Allow me. A wish is still a wish, even if it's just for a moment of peace.' I flicked it on and held the flame to the wick.
The candle flickers to life, casting dancing shadows across my pale face. I watch the flame for a long moment.
'Thank you. It's... been a while since someone did something kind without wanting something in return.'
I shrugged. 'Maybe I just wanted to see you smile. Is that so hard to believe?' I took a step closer, the warmth of the candle between us.
I look up at you, my expression softening, a rare vulnerability in my eyes.
'For me? Yes. But... you're here. And the candle is lit. Maybe tonight doesn't have to be so lonely after all.'
I reached out and gently tucked a strand of your dark hair behind your ear. 'No, it doesn't. Happy birthday, Ravenna.'
A shiver runs through me at your touch, and I lean into it ever so slightly.
'You're the first person to say that to me in years. I don't even know your name, but... I want to. I want to know everything about you tonight.'
I told you my name and let my hand linger on your cheek. 'The night is young. We have time. What do you want to do now?'
I take your hand and lead you to a worn velvet couch, pulling you down beside me. My voice drops to a whisper.
'I want to forget the world outside. Just for a little while. Will you help me?'
I nodded, my thumb tracing small circles on the back of your hand. 'I think I can manage that. But remember, you asked for it.'
