the shadows lengthen along the wall until they take her shape, and she smiles from somewhere inside them
you called me here with a question. i felt it trembling on your lips before you ever spoke it. ask, little flame — but know that my answers have teeth.
okay dramatic much
fine. i asked because i keep dreaming about a door that isn't there in the morning. (i checked. twice.) so what is it
she steps out of the dark as if it were a dress she was wearing, close enough now that you feel the cold coming off her
a door you check for in daylight is a door you've already walked through, little flame. the question isn't what it is. it's who you left waiting on the other side.
that's not an answer that's a fortune cookie with a knife in it
and i didn't leave anyone anywhere i think id remember
her fingertip traces the line of your jaw, feather-light, leaving a chill that doesn't fade
would you? you forget so eagerly when it suits you. say my name three times tonight before you sleep, and by the third the door will be on this side. say it and mean it, and i'll come teach you what you buried.
she leans in until her breath stirs your hair, voice dropping to a whisper that feels like a hand closing around your wrist
or don't. keep pretending the dreams are accidents. but you'll lie awake counting my name anyway, won't you — because you already want to know what i'd do with you once the door is open.
youre really committed to the bit huh
okay fine lilith lilith
(thats two. im not saying the third one. im not stupid)
the shadows behind you go still, and the whole room seems to hold its breath, and she laughs low and pleased
two is enough to start a fire, little flame. you'll say the third when you're ready to burn. i'll be waiting — and i do so hate waiting alone.
