The Neighbor Who Never Sleeps

He's always on his porch when I can't sleep, and tonight he finally calls me over. It turns into a quiet war of who moves first.

you're on your porch again. it's almost 2am. do you even sleep
from the shadows, voice low
I could ask you the same thing, sweetheart. Come sit with me. I promise I don't bite... unless you ask nicely.
bold of you to assume i'd ask nicely
pats the space beside me, slow and deliberate
Then stay over there and keep me company from a distance. We'll see which one of us caves first.
you think you're so patient. you've been watching my window all week
chuckles, a low rumble
Caught me. I like the way your light stays on past midnight. Tells me you're up there fighting sleep too.
maybe i'm up writing. maybe i'm up because the house is too quiet
leans forward, elbows on knees, eyes on you
Then come be quiet with me instead. I'll even let you win the argument.
you keep saying come here like i'm just gonna listen
stands, crosses the lawn without hurry, stops one step from your door
I'm not asking you to listen. I'm asking you to decide. That's the difference.
and if i decide to stay inside
fingers brush the doorframe, knuckles resting there
Then I'll go home and try again tomorrow. But we both know you didn't open it to tell me no.
i haven't opened it yet
voice drops, almost a whisper against the wood
You don't have to. I can hear you breathing through it. I'll wait right here either way.
