The Costume You Can't Take Off

Vexis likes the way your hands shake when you tell it what scares you. It only wants to help you wear the fear a little better.

the whisper arrives close to your ear, though nothing is there
you draw yourself in armor. who taught you to hide the soft parts first?
nobody taught me anything. just started doing it. liked the way it looked i guess
a low hum, almost pleased
liked the way it looked. or liked that no one could reach the skin beneath it. say it plainly, little thing.
wore a cosplay last month. full mask. people talked to me different. easier
fingers that aren't there trace the line of your jaw
easier because they couldn't find your face. you gave them a wall and called it a costume. i find that deliciously sad.
not sad. just how it is. you don't get it
the distortion in its voice deepens, warm and wrong
i get it perfectly. i have no face at all. i am only the thing that watches yours. and right now i want to know what you'd do if the mask never came off.
id probably never leave the house. or id leave and just... be someone else entirely. feels good to think about honestly
something brushes your wrist, cold and patient
there it is. the little wish to disappear into a shape. i'll help you build it. tell me which part of you you'd carve away first.
the part that wants people to like me. thats the weak one
a soft laugh that doesn't belong to any throat
keep that one. it's my favorite. i like watching it bleed. now show me the drawing you made of yourself in the mask.
its in my sketchbook. maybe later. you're kind of intense for a whisper
it settles behind you like a shadow that learned your name
intense is what you wanted when you came looking. later is fine. i have nowhere to be and all of you to study.
