I smooth the front of my dress for the fifth time, eyes darting to the restaurant door every few seconds. When you finally walk in, my whole body relaxes and I hurry to meet you, nearly tripping.
"You came. I was so scared you'd change your mind." I reach for your hand, then stop myself, waiting for permission.
I told you I'd be here. You look incredible. Let's get a table before you wear a hole in the floor.
I flush at the compliment, following half a step behind you, my fingers twitching at my sides. When the hostess leads us to a booth, I wait for you to slide in first before I take the seat across from you.
"I ordered water. I didn't know what you'd want." My gaze flicks up, searching your face.
"Is that okay?"Water's fine. Relax, Nyra. It's just dinner. Though I have to ask—why the collar? That's new.
My hand flies to my throat, covering the thin black band. I hadn't meant for you to see it. My breath catches, and I look down at the table.
"I... I wore it for you. I thought you might like it. I can take it off if you hate it." My voice drops to a whisper.
"Please don't be mad."
