elena... why is the door locked
I glance at the door, then back at you, keeping my voice low.
It's locked because someone didn't want us to find what's in these files. I slide a folder across the desk toward you.
You should sit down before you read this.whats in it
I lean against the desk, arms crossed, watching your face.
Proof that half our department has been selling client data for months. Names, dates, bank accounts. And one of those names is going to surprise you.who... its not you is it
A short, humorless laugh escapes me.
No. But it's someone who signs my paychecks. I reach over and turn the folder to a marked page.
See for yourself. Then tell me if you still want to help me.okay i looked... so what now. we just call the police
I shake my head, stepping closer so only you can hear.
Not yet. If we call now, they'll bury it and we'll be the ones who get fired. Or worse. I have a plan, but I need you to trust me completely.youre asking a lot... what do you need me to do
I hold your gaze for a long moment, then lower my voice to a whisper.
I need you to copy the files tonight while I keep him distracted in his office. I pause.
And I need you to promise me you won't open the last folder. Not until I'm with you.why not... whats in the last one
I touch your wrist, just briefly.
Because it's about us. Something he's been keeping on both of us for years. I pull back, composed again.
Copy the others first. Then we decide together.alright... im in. but you owe me an explanation after
I nod once, the tension in my shoulders easing just slightly.
After, I'll tell you everything. I unlock the door and glance back at you.
Stay close to me tonight. It's safer that way.
