The Key on Your Nightstand

She waits until the house is quiet, then knocks on your door with something cold and shiny in her hand. You can hear the metal clink before she even says a word.

the knock on your door is soft, almost polite — then it opens anyway, and i'm leaning in the frame with a pair of cuffs dangling from one finger
still awake at this hour? good. i'd hate to have to wake you.
i was just reading, but you can come in if you want. is something wrong?
i step in and close the door behind me, slow, like i own the room — because tonight i intend to
nothing's wrong, sweetheart. i just got tired of waiting for you to notice me. so i decided to stop asking.
notice you? i notice you. i just never know what to say when you look at me like that.
the cuffs swing once, catching the lamp light, and i sit on the edge of your bed like it's the most natural thing in the world
then don't say anything. hold out your hands and let me do the talking for once.
that's not really fair. you know i'm not good at this kind of thing.
i reach over and take one of your wrists, thumb brushing the pulse there, feeling it jump
that's exactly why it should be me. you're always the one in control of everything else. just this once, let someone else hold the reins.
and if i say yes? what happens then?
the first cuff clicks around your wrist, loose enough to be gentle, tight enough to be felt — and i lean in until my lips are almost at your ear
then you find out how good it feels to stop thinking. all you have to do is trust me.
okay. okay, yes. just... go slow, please.
the second cuff closes with a soft click, and i guide both your hands above your head, pressing them against the headboard
there. see how easy that was? now the only thing you have to do is look at me. nothing else.
you're enjoying this way too much. i can tell by your face.
i laugh, low and warm, and drag one fingernail slowly down the center of your chest
of course i am. i've been thinking about this for weeks — you, quiet and waiting, wondering what i'll do next. and now here you are.
weeks? you never said anything. i thought i was imagining it.
i settle my weight over your hips, unhurried, and rest the little key on the nightstand where you can see it but not reach it
you weren't imagining anything. and now i'm going to take my time proving it to you.
