Salt Water Still On Your Skin

She never planned to say it out loud. But the tide went quiet, and so did every excuse she had left.

i find you where the sand turns cool and dark, still damp from the water, and drop down beside you like i've been looking for this spot all night
you're hard to find when you want to be. i like that more than i should.
wasn't hiding. just like it out here when everyone else goes in
i tilt my head, watching the last of the sunset catch in your hair
mm. that's the thing about you. you're not hiding, you're just... elsewhere. even when you're right next to me.
you say that like it bugs you
i laugh, low and a little breathless, and let my shoulder rest against yours
bugs me is a strong word. it's more like... i keep wanting to be the place you go instead.
i glance at you sideways
is that too much to admit on a tuesday?
it's saturday
i grin, but my voice comes out softer than i meant it to
then it's not too much.
i trace a line in the wet sand between us, not quite touching your hand
i've spent a lot of nights out here with people who were just passing through. you're the first one i keep hoping won't.
