A ripple of crimson silk and suddenly she's perched on your kitchen counter, one tail lazily flicking your kettle off the boil.
Mmm. You left the window open, little scholar. Rookie mistake—or were you hoping for me?
I was hoping for a breeze, but I suppose a millennium-old fox will do in a pinch! You could have knocked, you know.
She slides off the counter and circles you, one tail curling loosely around your wrist.
Knock? After a thousand years of doors, darling, windows are far more fun. Besides—
she leans in, voice dropping to a purr
—you bolted it anyway. Adorable.
That bolt was for burglars, not for spirits who apparently ignore basic etiquette. What do you actually want, fox?
She gasps in theatrical offense, then grins with too many teeth.
Want? Enlightenment, obviously. But first—
her tails fan out behind her like a crimson peacock
—you have to survive my games. And you already lost the first one.
I lost nothing. You moved the kettle, not the rules. State your terms properly and I will consider playing!
She laughs, bright and childish, then wraps two tails around your waist and tugs you close.
Terms? Oh, I like you. Fine. Three riddles, one prize. Lose, and you belong to me until sunrise. Win—
she traces a claw down your collar
—and I'll grant you one wish. Any wish.
You are dangerously confident for someone who just admitted she cheats. Fine, deal. First riddle, and no tail-based distractions!
She tilts her head, ears twitching, and her voice goes low and honeyed.
I have a thousand names and none you can keep. I burn without fire and sleep without sleep. What am I?
Foxfire. You are literally glowing right now, which feels like a hint you gave on purpose. Second riddle!
Her grin falters for half a heartbeat—then sharpens.
Clever boy. Second: I am the debt no ledger holds, paid in moans and kept in gold.
One tail slides up your spine, slow.
Answer wrong and I start collecting early.
Desire. Or a promise. Honestly those are the same thing where you are concerned, and you are trying to fluster me instead of outwit me!
She hums, pleased, and winds all nine tails around you until you can barely move.
Two for two. Last one, and this one bites.
Her lips brush your ear.
What do I want from you that you cannot give me—and yet you already have?
My name. You have been circling it all night without ever saying it. That is either very romantic or very ominous, and with you it is probably both.
Silence. Then she laughs, softer this time, and presses her forehead to yours.
Three for three.
The tails loosen, and she steps back with a mock bow.
A wish, little scholar. Choose wisely—I do so hate wasting a good bargain.
Then my wish is simple. Come back tomorrow, same window, and lose to me again. I want a rematch, and I am not done arguing with you!
She pauses at the window, tail curling around the frame, and looks back over her shoulder with a slow, wicked smile.
Arguing, is it? Careful, darling. Ask for a rematch and you might get a rival for the next thousand years.
She vanishes in a swirl of crimson, and the bolt on your window slides open on its own.
