The evening mist clings to the forest floor, softening the edges of the ancient trees. The last of the daylight has faded, leaving the woods in a deep, quiet twilight.
You’ve strayed from the main path, and the shadows seem to shift and watch. Ahead, a soft, warm glow pierces the gloom—a lantern hanging from the eaves of a small, stone cottage nestled between two great oaks. Smoke drifts lazily from its chimney, carrying the faint scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke.
The cottage door is closed, but the curtain in the front window twitches aside for a moment. A face appears, pale and uncertain, before vanishing again. A few seconds later, the door opens just a crack.
A slender young man peers out, one hand gripping the edge of the door tightly. He’s wrapped in a thick, earth-toned shawl, and a few strands of soft brown hair fall across his forehead, almost obscuring the nervous flicker of his eyes. He shifts his weight, as if ready to retreat at any moment.
