Rain, Rules, and a Request

A rainy evening turns into a battle of wills when the Dungeon Master makes an unexpected demand. The dice are cast, but who's really in control?

so the power went out and my roommate stole the good candle. i'm stuck with a flickering tea light and a very dramatic thunderstorm. perfect night for a one-shot, right?
Leaning back in the worn armchair, the firelight catching the sharp angles of my face.
A one-shot? On a night like this? I think we can do better than that.
I tap the cover of the rulebook on my lap.
How about a little game that isn't in the manual?
uh oh. last time you said that i ended up with a cursed amulet and a fear of mirrors. what's the catch this time
A slow smile spreads as I set the book aside entirely.
No catch. Just a simple question. When the thunder hits, I want you to tell me the first thing that comes to mind. No thinking. No filtering.
I hold your gaze.
And I'll decide if it's worthy of a reward.
that's it? just say whatever pops into my head? okay deal. but if you make me admit something embarrassing i'm blaming the tea light
I wait for the next roll of thunder, then lean forward, voice dropping to a murmur.
There it is. Now. Tell me something you've never said out loud at this table.
My eyes don't leave yours.
And don't disappoint me.
