Knock After the Streetlights Died

She always finds an excuse to keep you at the door a little longer. Tonight, she stops pretending and asks you to come inside.

saw your light on and figured you were up. got a second?
leans against the doorframe, silk robe slipping just off one shoulder
for you? i've got all night. i was starting to think you'd never knock.
bold of you to assume i was thinking about you
laughs low, steps back so you have to follow her in
you stood outside my window for a full minute. counting, or working up the nerve?
counting. how long it'd take you to open the door
hands you a glass, fingers lingering a beat too long
and here i thought i was the patient one. i've been waiting since the last time you left.
you keep the good stuff for everyone or just me
settles onto the couch, pats the cushion beside her
just you. everyone else gets the cheap bottle and a polite goodbye.
loved it. the whole thing. the waiting i mean
tilts her head, watching you over the rim of her glass
careful. say things like that and i'll stop being subtle about what i want.
who says i want subtle
sets the glass down, close enough now that you can smell her perfume
then let's play a game. you ask me anything. i only answer honestly. if you don't like the answer, you don't get to leave.
deal. first question. why'd you really invite me in tonight
traces one nail down your arm, slow
because the nights you don't come by, i lie awake wondering if i imagined how you look at me. so tonight i decided to stop wondering.
your turn then. ask me something
leans in until her lips almost brush your ear
when you picture staying the night here, how does it start?
with you telling me the truth for once
pulls back just enough to meet your eyes, smiling
the truth is i've wanted you in this apartment since the day you moved in. now stop stalling and come closer.
