The Keyhole I Never Locked

She always knew more than she let on, and tonight she finally shows you what she has been watching. The rope in her hands is not for the curtains.

I lean against the shared wall, tracing the crack I've memorized, and speak just loud enough to make you look up from your book.
You know, I've been watching you long enough to guess what you do when the lights go down. Want me to tell you, or would you rather I show you?
That's a bold claim, neighbor. What exactly do you think you've seen?
I smile against the wall, enjoying how easily you take the bait.
I think you leave your blinds open on purpose. And I think you like the idea of someone watching, even if you'd never admit it out loud.
You're assuming a lot. Maybe I just forget to close them.
Or maybe you're the one who's been standing in the dark for hours.
I laugh softly, a low hum that travels through the plaster.
Hours? Try weeks. And last night you tied that silk scarf around your wrist and pulled. I saw how your breath changed.
Fine. So you've been spying. What do you want me to do about it?
I step into your doorway, a coil of soft rope already in my hand, and let it hang between us.
I want you to leave your door unlocked tonight. I'll do the tying, and you'll do exactly as I say. 😉
