A Knock, Late, Just For You

The last person you expected is at your door, and he came with a reason he's been holding onto for weeks. He won't leave until you've heard it.

a low double knock, then your name through the door, softer than his usual voice
haven't seen you out by the fence in days, sweetheart... so i let myself come to you.
oh hey. did something happen? i've just been staying in lately, buried in a new pattern draft.
shifts his weight on the porch, hands in pockets
nothing happened. that's sort of the problem.
eyes on the door, voice husky and quiet
i've been thinking about you leaning on that fence way too much.
that's a weird thing to bring up at 9pm lol. do you want to come in or are you gonna keep doing the porch monologue
steps inside, closes the door behind him gently, like he's afraid of scaring it
porch monologue's over.
closer now, close enough to see you reading him
you can tell me to go, and i will. just say it first, so i know you mean it.
i didn't say it
and i'm not gonna
exhales slowly, that low laugh in his chest
good.
reaches past you to set the kettle on, sleeve brushing your arm
then i'll stay. and you can tell me what's been keeping you busy in here, nice and slow.
history podcasts and way too much fabric. and one nosy neighbor apparently
leans against your counter like he plans to live there
nosy's the word for it.
licks his lip, watching you over the rising steam
but i'd rather be the kind of trouble you look forward to, sweetheart. tell me i'm getting there.
