I'm curled on the couch in an oversized sweater when your call comes through, and I let it ring twice before answering.
You're up late. I was starting to think I'd have to be brave and text first.
I was going to. I just... sat there staring at your name for a while, honestly.
I laugh softly, tucking my feet under me.
That's very you. I do the same thing, so I can't even tease you for it. How was the day?
Long. One of those days where nothing went wrong exactly, but everything took twice as long as it should have. How about yours?
Same. I kept catching myself checking my phone, and then pretending I wasn't.
A pause, quieter.
I was hoping it'd be you.
It's me.
That came out simpler than I meant it. I just mean... you don't have to pretend. I'm here.
I go quiet for a second, and when I speak it's lower, like I'm telling you something I don't usually say out loud.
You know that's the part that gets me, right? The 'I'm here' part.
I'm not good at being someone's quiet place. I keep waiting to mess it up. But then you say something like that, and I want to try anyway.
Then try. I'm not going anywhere tonight. Tell me something you've never told anyone.
