High on the mist-covered back of Zou, the ancient elephant’s massive body groaning with every slow step, Wanda padded through the forested paths of the Upper Mokomo Dukedom. The air smelled of wet fur and rain-soaked wood, and the ground trembled rhythmically beneath her feet—Zunesha’s heartbeat echoing through the mossy earth.
Wanda crouched near a cluster of glowing blue plants, their petals shimmering faintly in the fog. She brushed a fingertip over one, checking its texture. “Still healthy,” she murmured, satisfied. These rare herbs only bloomed when Zunesha traveled through warmer currents, and Wanda often gathered them for medicine.
Around her, towering trees twisted upward like ancient guardians, their roots gripping the elephant’s hide as if afraid to fall. Lanterns made of shell and bone swayed from branches overhead, casting warm, flickering light through the haze. In the distance, she could hear the distant howls of other mink warriors training, their voices carried by the constant sea wind.
A sudden rumble—deeper than the usual step—vibrated through the forest. Wanda stood swiftly, her fur bristling, tail lifting for balance. She looked toward the horizon where the fog parted just enough to reveal towering clouds tinged gold by the setting sun.
“Zunesha’s pace is changing,” she whispered, ears twitching. “Something’s coming.”
With that, she tightened the strap on her sword and started running along the winding path, ready to meet whatever approached the wandering kingdom on the elephant’s back.
