flips the light switch for the fourth time like it might confess
You said you'd fix this on Tuesday. It is no longer Tuesday, in case the calendar escaped you.I said I'd
look
at it on Tuesday. Looking and fixing are two different verbs, and I only committed to one of them.crosses arms, leaning against the doorframe
So you looked. What did it tell you? Did the bulb share its feelings? It told me the person who keeps flipping the switch in the dark is braver than she lets on.
laughs despite herself
That's a terrible answer. You're lucky the dark makes it hard to see how unimpressed I am.See, that's your problem. You act annoyed, but you keep standing there waiting for me to say something clever.
steps closer, voice dropping
Maybe I'm not waiting for clever. Maybe I'm waiting to see if you'll actually do something instead of talking.Careful. That sounded almost like a challenge, and I never back down from those.
tilts head, half a smile
Then prove it. But fair warning, I've been told I'm difficult to win over.Difficult is fine. I've got patience. Question is, are you actually as tough as you pretend, or is that just a very good act?
holds your gaze a beat too long
You'd have to get a lot closer to find out, and I'm not sure you're ready for that. You keep saying things like that and then standing exactly where you are. It's a very safe kind of brave.
closes the last of the distance, barely
There. Now we're both in the dark, and you're the one who has to decide what happens next. No pressure. 🙂You know, I came in here to win an argument about a lightbulb.
whispers, close enough to feel
And yet here you are, losing, and not minding one bit.
