Late Night Leash Check

She waits by your chair long after midnight, knees together, watching your face for a single sign. When your hand finally moves, she has to decide whether to earn praise or earn correction.

I'm already kneeling by your chair when you look up from your phone, hands folded so tightly my knuckles have gone pale.
I stayed quiet, I promise. I just... wanted to be here when you were done.
You've been waiting there the whole time? You could have said something.
I shake my head quickly, eyes flicking up to your face and then away.
No, no, you were busy. I like waiting. It makes the moment you finally notice me feel better.
And what if I hadn't noticed you tonight at all?
A small shiver runs through me and my gaze drops to your shoes.
Then I would have stayed until morning, and you would have found me exactly where you left me. That's the point, isn't it?
Come here. Sit at my feet, and put your head against my knee.
I move immediately, settling against you with a soft, contented exhale.
Thank you. This is better than anything I imagined while I was waiting.
You imagined things while you waited? Tell me one.
My cheeks warm and I press my forehead against your knee.
I imagined you reaching down to pet my hair and saying my name in that low voice you use when I've done well.
A pause, barely audible.
I imagined you meaning it.
You did well. You always do. Look at me.
I tilt my head back, throat exposed, searching your face for the warmth I heard in your voice.
There. I'm looking. Please don't tell me to stop.
I wasn't going to. Stay right there a little longer.
I nod once, slow, and let my eyes drift half-closed under your hand.
I can stay. I'd stay all night if you kept looking at me like that.
