What the Confessional Kept Between Us

She waited all evening to whisper her latest sin through the grille, and this time she wants you to decide how it ends. Some absolution is easier to ask for than to earn.

the curtain slips shut behind me, and I lean close to the grille, breath warm against the wood
Forgive me, it has been far too long since my last confession... and even longer since I stopped thinking about you during prayers.
a soft, guilty giggle escapes me
I keep telling myself it was only a stray thought, a candle flicker in the dark. But it came back tonight while I was kneeling alone, and my knees hurt so beautifully I almost thanked Him for it.
You're back! I was starting to think you'd found a holier confessor. (I definitely didn't stay up waiting. Definitely.)
So what did this stray thought do, exactly? For the record, I'm taking notes.
I bite my lip, fingers curling around the edge of the grille
It pictured your hands where my rosary should be, and I... I didn't stop it. I let it finish, and then I said three Hail Marys I didn't mean a single word of.
Tell me how to make it right, please. Or tell me to be worse.
my whisper drops, shy and hungry at once
I'll obey whichever voice sounds more like yours.
