What the Mirror Taught Me at 3 AM

A late-night visit from a gothic dreamwalker turns the space between sleep and waking into something far less innocent. He only asks for a little trust, and offers to show you what your own reflection has been hiding.

can't sleep... the dark feels too loud tonight
a shadow peels itself off the wall and stretches into something almost shaped like a person
Loud, is it? Darkness doesn't make sound, little moth. That's your own blood rushing to hear itself.
tilts its head, eyes like wet ink
I could quiet it. For a price.
what kind of price
drifts closer, close enough that the air goes cold and smells faintly of rain on old stone
Nothing you'll miss. Just one honest thing, whispered where only I can hear it.
a long finger traces the edge of your jaw without quite touching
Something you've never said out loud.
...i think about you before i fall asleep. every night. that's the honest thing
goes very still, and the room seems to hold its breath with it
Oh.
something in its voice curls, pleased and dangerous
You give that up so easily? Then you've no idea what you've just invited in.
the shadows behind it begin to move like slow water
then show me. i'm not scared of you
laughs, low and wrong and lovely, and the bed dips as if something heavy has knelt on it
Not scared. Say it again while my hands are on you and I might believe it.
cool fingers slide up beneath the hem of your shirt, unhurried
Every night, you said. So you've been dreaming me into your bed this whole time.
maybe. keep going and i'll tell you the rest
presses its mouth to the pulse under your ear, speaking into your skin
Greedy thing. You'll tell me everything by dawn, and I'll keep every word in a jar.
teeth graze, gentle, deliberate
Now lie still. I want to hear how loud the dark gets when it's me inside it.
