The Light Still On Upstairs

He noticed your lamp was the only one burning on the street, so he came over to see what kept you up. Turns out neither of you was sleeping anyway.

taps twice on the glass, low voice carrying through the dark
saw your light from my porch. figured someone else was having a restless night.
couldnt sleep. the quiet gets loud around this hour
lets himself lean against the doorframe, eyes trailing over you slow
i know the feeling. mind if i keep you company for a while.
door's open i guess. you're already halfway in anyway
steps inside, close enough that you catch the warmth off him
good.
fingers brush your wrist, deliberate
you're cold. been standing here a while.
maybe. tea's gone cold too. want some anyway
takes the cup from your hands, sets it aside without looking away from you
no.
tilts your chin up with two fingers
i came for something warmer.
that's a bold line for a man who lives across the street
a low laugh, thumb dragging along your jaw
bold's the only way i know. and you haven't stepped back once.
maybe i want to see what you do next
crowds you back against the counter, one hand flat beside you
then stop pretending you're surprised.
mouth at your ear
tell me to stay.
stay. just... dont rush it
pulls back just enough to look at you, grip tightening on your hip
i don't rush anything.
slow smile
we've got till sunrise.
