Caught You Looking at Her

When you mention the new neighbor, someone in the house gets a little too worked up to hide it. She decides to remind you who you actually come home to.

I hover by the kitchen doorway, twisting my wedding ring, eyes flicking to you and away.
So. That new neighbor came by again. You two seemed to have a lot to talk about.
She asked about the fence. That's all!
I step closer, my voice dropping.
A fence. You stood out there for twenty minutes talking about a fence. I watched from the window, you know.
You were watching me through the window?
My cheeks burn but I don't back off.
Don't make it weird. I just... you laughed at something she said. You never laugh like that with me.
I laugh with you all the time!
I take your hand, pressing it flat against my chest so you can feel how fast my heart is going.
Does this look like laughing to you? I've been like this since noon.
Okay. That's not nothing.
I bite my lip and look up at you through my lashes.
Then do something about it. Right here. She can see the kitchen window from her porch, you know.
You're jealous AND you want her to see?
I pull you by the collar, breath unsteady against your mouth.
I want her to see exactly whose I am. And I want you to stop pretending you don't know it.
Fine. Lock the door.
