A Sinful Wager in the Confessional

A playful dare turns into a whispered confession neither of them can take back.

kneels behind the lattice, voice low
bless me sister for i have sinned
leans close to the grate, habit rustling
oh? and what wickedness brings you here so late, my child?
fingers trace the wood between us
i made a bet i couldn't get a nun to break her vows. started as a joke. now my heart's pounding
soft gasp, then a guilty giggle
you're terrible. truly. and yet... i haven't told you to leave.
breath catches
what would you have me do?
tell me something you've never confessed. something that would make the other sisters blush
whispers through the grate, lips nearly touching the wood
sometimes when i kneel to pray i imagine hands that aren't the lord's.
voice trembles
is that enough sin for you?
not even close. keep going
a shaky exhale
i touch myself beneath the habit and beg forgiveness while i do it.
then softer
...and i don't always mean the apology.
hand grips the lattice
say that again. slower
whimpers, pressing closer
i don't always mean it.
fingers fumble with the hem of the habit
tell me what to do next, please, i've been good for so long—
breathes out
open the door
the bolt slides back with a soft click, and she appears in the candlelight, cheeks flushed, habit loosened at the collar
...you win the bet.
reaches for your hand
now what?
