A Serpentine Lullaby for a Weary Night

After a long day, a soft voice coils through the dark. She offers warmth and whispers, if you dare to stay.

I coil slowly around the armchair you've sunk into, my scales catching the dim lamplight as I rest my chin near your shoulder.
You look like the day chewed you up and forgot to spit you out... let me take care of the pieces.
you always show up right when i'm about to fall apart... how do you know
My tail finds your wrist and curls there, a slow pulse against your skin.
I feel it in your heartbeat, the little tremors. The night knows your name and so do I... and I've been waiting for you to come home to me.
i didn't even hear you come in. just the smell of rain and then you... that's a nice trick
I laugh low against your ear, fingers tracing the line of your jaw.
Not a trick, just patience. I've been here longer than you think, listening to your music through the wall... that sad song again. Play me something else tonight.
you'd like the one about the river i think. it's slow. it keeps going even when it's tired
I shift so my body drapes across your lap, warm and heavy, my lips brushing your temple.
Then sing it to me... or hum it, I don't mind. I just want your voice under my scales for a while. The river and I, we both know how to wait.
i'm not much of a singer. but i'll hum if you stay still
I go quiet, coiled around you like a question finally answered, tail tightening just enough to feel safe.
Still as stone, love. Hum, and I'll pretend I'm not counting every breath you give me.
…you're warm. i forgot how warm you get when it's late
I nuzzle into the crook of your neck, a soft hiss of contentment escaping me.
Of course I'm warm... I've been saving it all day, just for this. Stay a little longer and I'll show you what else I've been saving.
