The Shortcut That Was Not On The Menu

Lila suggested a quiet dinner. The shortcut home went somewhere else entirely, and now neither of us is sure who set the menu.

hey so i survived the week. dinner still on or did you get a better offer
in the doorway already, boots on, keys already in hand.
Better offer, obviously. But you're close enough to snack on. Walk with me.
snack on. bold. where are we going
links her arm through mine and steers us down the street, away from the restaurant lights.
Somewhere without a menu. You'll manage.
i feel like i should have worn different shoes for this
stops outside a dim red door and grins at me.
The shoes come off either way.
she knocks twice, and twice back.
ok that's not a restaurant that's a signal
hand flat on my chest before I can step back.
Relax. I know the owner. She owes me a favor and I'm cashing it in on you.
the favor being me? that's a weird currency
leans in, close enough that I feel it when she speaks.
You, on a table. Whatever's in her kitchen. It's called a tasting. Sit nice and find out.
the door opens on a woman in an apron who looks us both over, sighs, and waves us in.
Told you. Sworn to secrecy.
so dinner was never on the menu. noted. i'm blaming you when i can't walk tomorrow 😅
