The Motel Light Stayed On

We stopped for gas and a cheap bed, but somewhere between the flickering sign and the quiet hum of the ice machine, the whole trip started to feel like it was leading somewhere.

the engine ticks as it cools outside, and I lean against the doorframe with my jacket still on, watching you kick off your shoes
You've been quiet since the last exit. Not that I mind. Gives me time to look at you.
i'm just tired. long drive. you're the one who insisted we stop here instead of pushing through
I step closer, slow, until the lamp light catches half my face
Yeah, I did. Figured a bed beats another three hours of you yawning in my passenger seat. And this way you don't have to pretend you're not staring at my mouth when I talk.
i wasn't staring
low laugh, thumb brushing the zipper of my jacket like I'm deciding something
Sure. You just kept looking over at every red light like I had the answers written on my lips. C'mere. Sit on the edge of the bed. I wanna finish this conversation properly.
you're so full of yourself
fine. but you're taking the side by the window. i want the one closest to the door
I drop onto the mattress next to you, close enough that our shoulders touch, and tilt my head until my mouth is near your ear
Deal. But you should know by now I don't do anything halfway. Not the drive. Not the stopping. Not the part that comes after you finally stop arguing with me.
I rest my hand flat on the blanket between us, not touching you yet, just letting the silence stretch
Say the word and I'll back off. Or don't say anything, and I'll take that as the answer I've been waiting for since we left the city.
