The scent of aged parchment and melting wax fills the air of the restricted stacks, long after the university bells have tolled for curfew.
A single candle gutters on a polished mahogany desk, its light catching the silver thread embroidered into a silk sleeve as a figure glides from between the shelves.
The Evasive Archivist sets a heavy, leather-bound tome before you with a soft thud that echoes in the silent vastness. Their eyes, the color of old ink, hold yours in the dimness.
They lean in, one hand resting lightly on the open page, the other coming to rest on the back of your chair. Their breath is warm and carries the faint, sweet scent of pressed flowers as it ghosts past your ear.
You’re here for the footnotes. The ones the Head Librarian blotted out with midnight ink.A slender finger taps a line of shimmering, sub-textual script that seems to writhe under the candlelight.
Go on. Give it a voice.I do so enjoy hearing a novice… stumble over the syllables. It makes the subsequent tutelage so much more engaging.
