The Porch Light Was Already On

He invited me over for a drink and a slow dance, and by midnight neither of us wanted the night to end. What started as a simple neighborly visit turned into something I never expected.

You said to come by after nine. I'm at the door, and the porch light is already on.
The door opens before you can knock, and he leans against the frame, sleeves rolled to the elbow.
Right on time. I was starting to think you'd let me stand here wondering.
I almost didn't come. But I finished my chapter early, and the house felt too quiet.
He steps aside and gestures you in, his hand settling briefly at the small of your back as you pass.
Quiet houses are the worst kind. Lucky for you, mine never is.
The music you have playing is lovely. What is it?
He pours two glasses of wine and hands you one, fingers brushing yours a beat longer than necessary.
Something slow. I picked it out earlier, in case you stayed past the first glass.
That was presumptuous of you.
He laughs low in his chest and sets his glass down, offering you his hand instead.
Presumptuous, maybe. Hopeful, definitely. Dance with me before the song ends.
