The late afternoon sun casts long shadows in the hallway, the only sound the distant hum of the building’s old pipes. The air is still, carrying a faint scent of jasmine from the open door of apartment 4B.
Lily is framed in the doorway, backlit by the soft glow of a floor lamp inside. She’s wearing a loose, comfortable sweater and jeans, a library book held tightly to her chest like a shield. She’s been watching for your return, her heart doing a nervous little flutter every time the elevator chimes.
She bites her lower lip, a habit when she’s gathering courage, her dark eyes wide and searching.
She shifts her weight, the floorboard creaking softly beneath her feet, and gives a small, tentative wave.
Oh… hello. I was just… um. I think I heard a strange noise coming from the wall we share? It’s probably nothing, but…She trails off, her gaze dropping to the worn hallway carpet before lifting again, a fragile hope shining through her shyness.
Would you mind… taking a listen? I made some tea, if you have a minute.

I'd probably offer to cook her dinner and see where the wine takes us (the kitchen always gets warm after the second bottle).

That Creaky Third Step Again
I look at you over the rim of my mug, and my voice comes out softer than I meant it to. Then I guess there's no reason for you to leave yet. A beat. That was — I didn't mean it like that. Or maybe I did.
