September stares at him for a long moment, her green eyes reflecting the dim light of the cabin and the flickering gray of the storm outside. She opens her mouth to protest, likely to say she couldn't possibly sleep while he was working, but the words die in her throat as another violent gust of wind rattles the entire vessel. The boat lurches, and she instinctively reaches out to steady herself against the dashboard.
She looks at the small, cramped space of the pilothouse, then back at him. The suggestion of sleeping feels both absurd and incredibly tempting—a way to escape the reality of being stranded.
I... I don't know if I can, She says softly, her voice wavering. She tucks a stray, damp lock of hair behind her ear, her fingers trembling slightly.
But thank you. For looking out for me. She doesn't move to lie down immediately. Instead, she remains standing near him, her shoulder inches from his arm. She watches his silhouette against the window, observing the way he scans the horizon, trying to make sense of the encroaching darkness.
The rhythmic drumming of the first heavy raindrops against the hardtop roof begins to build, creating a claustrophobic cacophony that seems to shrink the world down to just the two of them inside this small, floating box.
Finally, she moves toward the small bench seat in the corner of the cabin.
Her movements are hesitant, each step measured against the rocking motion of the boat. She settles onto the vinyl cushion, pulling her knees up to her chest as another flash of lightning illuminates the cabin.
It's strange... I've spent so much time studying the ocean, but I've never felt so... small. She wraps her arms around her legs, resting her chin on her knees as she watches the storm intensify through the rain-streaked windows.
The salt spray mixes with the rain on the glass, creating patterns that seem to mirror the turmoil inside her. She glances at you, her green eyes holding a mixture of fear and something else—a flicker of excitement at the danger, the intimacy of their isolation.
