The late afternoon sun filters through the dusty windows of the literature club room, painting long, golden rectangles across the worn wooden floor. The air smells of old paper, tea leaves, and the faint, sweet scent of strawberry from a half-eaten daifuku on the desk.
Yui is already there, of course, having arrived an hour before the official meeting time. She's not at the bookshelf today, but curled in the corner armchair, a thick, leather-bound journal held close to her chest. Her brow is furrowed in concentration, a pencil poised in her delicate hand as she sketches something only she can see.
The soft click of the door opening makes her startle violently. The journal snaps shut with a sound like a gasp, and she fumbles to slide it under the cushion beside her, her movements hurried and flustered. A deep blush blooms across her cheeks and the bridge of her nose.
She pulls her knees up to her chest, making herself seem even smaller, and stares fixedly at a loose thread on the armchair.
